Camp Wanatachi: A New Musical

by Beth Levendis August 27, 2009

**** [FOUR STARS] Camp Wanatachi takes a topic often exploited for provocative drama—a gay teen’s sexual awakening—and strips it down to a sweet story about a simple crush. Natalie Weiss’s musical, cowritten with composers Conrad Winslow and Travis Stewart, is set at an all-girls summer camp, and evokes that fraught environment well. Much of the play is spent familiarizing us with the show’s archetypal characters (a bossy girl, a slutty girl, an awkward girl, a nerdy girl, horny counselors, goofy boys from the camp across the water); a weird subplot involving disgruntled New York City expatriates bent on disrupting the camp with radio transmissions keeps things interesting. It’s only in the second half that one of the girls falls for another. In the meantime, you’re treated to music worthy of the program’s Fischerspooner namedrop; and although the cast does an excellent job—particularly Aleque Reid, Biet Simkin and Weiss herself—the live band may be the real stars of the show. Camp Wanatachi defies all expectations of both gay coming-of-age tales and musicals. The result is refreshing and uplifting.

Touching Testimonial From Fan Noelle
August 16, 2009 12:23 am

Noelle has been in contact with Lindsey and myself the past couple of days. Lindsey and I wanted to share her story with you and Noelle agreed and wrote this up. We think it shows the power that a person can have in another person’s life and welcome anyone else who has been deeply touched by Bridget in any way to share their stories with us as well. Thank you, Noelle, for your permission to share this!

“Dear Bridget Regan,

My name’s Noelle, and I’m a huge fan of yours. I’m writing this because you’re an absolutely amazing actress and have really changed what Sword of Truth means to me, but you’ve also given me a hope on a whole different level with Camp Wanatachi. Your work on Camp Wanatachi truly has given me hope again. My greatest wish would be if you had the time to read this, so I could personally thank you for what you’ve given me and others everywhere.

Camp Wanatachi: A New Musical – FringeNYC Press Release
by Natalie Weiss July 15, 2009

13 YEAR OLD CHRISTIAN LESBIAN IS CUTEST THING EVER!

(New York City, NY) Spirit-soaked and hormone-charged, CAMP WANATACHI is the new musical comedy about two 13-year-old-girls who fall in love at Christian summer camp.

Written and composed by Natalie Weiss of Unicornicopia, and produced by Bridget Regan (star of Disney-ABC’s LEGEND OF THE SEEKER) and Ian Pai (Co-Founder of Blue Man Group and Musical Director of Fischerspooner), this genre-mashing musical will be performed five times in the New York International Fringe Festival 2009.

With a live orchestra, sick beats by glitch hero Machinedrum and songs like “We All Need Jesus in Our Lives” and “Let’s Ride Bareback”, this nostalgic musical is super futuristic.
