How does a thoroughly modern girl from sunny San Diego prepare to play a dagger-wielding, mind-controlling heroine from another TV dimension?

If you are “Legend of the Seeker” star Bridget Regan, it helps to start early.

“I was always quite determined,” the 27-year-old actress said. “Apparently, I wore white cowboy boots for a year straight when I was 5. My mom always said there was no arguing with me.”

She was born and raised in Carlsbad, and her parents still live there. But Regan spends nine months of the year in New Zealand shooting “Legend of the Seeker,” a fantasy drama now in its second season. The show airs locally on KSWB/Channel 69 (Cable 5).

Inspired by the “Sword of Truth” novels by Terry Goodkind, “Legend of the Seeker” follows the adventures of the brave and noble Richard Cypher (Craig Horner) as he battles the loathsome tyrant, Darken Rahl. ?Regan plays his comrade and love interest Kahlan Amnell, a brave and strong-willed sorceress (also known as a Confessor) who can control the minds of anyone who loves her. Kahlan is also quick with a dagger. Regan? Not so much.

“When you’re fighting with daggers, you have to get quite close, which means my hands are always getting smashed,” Regan said by phone from New York, where she was doing a slew of publicity events before flying back to New Zealand. “I did get rushed to the hospital one night when I accidentally punched a shield. I thought my finger was broken, but I was fine.

“You do get tousled around a bit on this show, but it’s so worth it.”

The youngest of two girls (older sister Erin lives in San Elijo Hills), Regan discovered acting at about the same time she discovered white cowboy boots. With the non-pushy support of her schoolteacher mother, Cathy, and insurance-salesman father, Jim, Regan began acting in local theater productions when she was 6, and she never stopped. She made her debut playing a Munchkin in a production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. She performed in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” five times before turning 10. And as a student at the San Dieguito High School Academy, she did three stints with the La Jolla Playhouse’s Summer Conservatory program.

It was the latter experience that helped turn the musical-theater-loving teen into a serious performer.

“That’s a terrific program,” Regan said of the conservatory’s focus on the art of dramatic acting. “That’s when things changed for me. That’s when I knew I wanted to be an actor.”

After graduating from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Regan went directly to New York, where she juggled multiple day jobs (nanny, waitress, gym employee) and many auditions. She played small parts in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “Six Degrees” and a larger part in “The Black Donnellys.” And she spent six months on Broadway playing multiple roles in “Is He Dead?,” a Mark Twain farce that also starred Norbert Leo Butz of “Wicked” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” fame.

Last year, Regan found herself in Los Angeles doing a second audition for “Legend of the Seeker.” The producers gave her the part, along with a week to pack herself and her shoe collection off to New Zealand, where the country’s superior dairy products make up for its total lack of good Mexican food. Almost.

Then, there is the matter of playing Kahlan Amnell, a role that requires horseback riding, dagger fighting and a heavy white-velvet dress that takes 20 minutes just to lace up. Fortunately, Regan quickly discovered that a leap of faith wasn’t necessary.

“I sort of fell in love with her,” the ebullient actress said with a surprised laugh. “I like that she was really strong on the outside but had this really soft center. She was really masculine and noble, but she was very feminine as well. There was a great dichotomy in the character that is not really common in young female roles.

“I am 5’9,’’ and I had trouble getting cast in typical roles because I was so tall. The roles for young, twentysomething women can be such fragile characters, and I’m not one you can knock over. I needed a part like this.”

And the part needed an actress like Regan. Unlike such TV epics as “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” “Legend of the Seeker” doesn’t serve its heroic tales with a side of campy humor. So when Kahlan says something like, “As long as you’re still the Seeker, you need your Confessor by your side,” Regan has to mean it. And she does.

“If you don’t believe these characters, the audience is not going to buy the magic. We work hard to make the relationships really real. At the heart of the show, it’s a romance. It’s an action adventure, but at heart it’s about two people who love each other.”

The new season of the syndicated series Legend of the Seeker starts tonight (7 p.m. on WMYV, channel 15), but for star Bridget Regan the season is already at the halfway mark.

Regan, a 2004 graduate of the UNC School of the Arts’ School of Drama, was in the States last week on a publicity jaunt to promote Seeker before returning to film the show’s 11th episode out of 22 that will be produced this season, the show’s second.

The series is a fantasy-adventure that is filmed in New Zealand. She plays Kahlan, an enigmatic warrior who fights the forces of evil alongside a young woodsman and a wizard. “I got to do a swordfight the other day, which was really cool,” Regan said in a phone interview.

Her favorite thing about the role, though, is having the opportunity to develop a character over time.

“I get to make a character grow, make her become stronger and stronger as new experiences come up for her,” she said.

Regan, 27, speaks highly of her days at UNCSA and said she still keeps in touch with Gerald Freedman, the dean of the School of Drama. “I sometimes want to go back there, dress all in black and take another class,” she said. “I love everything about the school. That time of my life is so precious to me…. It’s taught me everything that I need to know.”

Among the things she misses the most about North Carolina, she said, are sweet iced tea and Southern food. “I don’t think New Zealand’s ever even seen a hush puppy,” she said.

Legend of the Seeker, a syndicated fantasy series you may never have heard of but that’s actually pretty darn entertaining, returns this weekend for a swashbuckling second season.

We just caught up with series stars Bridget Regan and Craig Horner to learn what we can expect for Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell and Seeker of Truth Richard Cypher in the new episodes. (Psst…if you’re not familiar with the show, please don’t be put off by the fancy nomenclature derived from the Sword of Truth books on which the series is based. Mother Confessor just means “superhot nun with fighting skills” and a Seeker of Truth is, more or less, a noble knight in a shining armor. You’ve met their like before.)

So, what is to come in season two? We heard tell of leather-clad bad girls, jealous wenches and some sexy body-swapping…

Richard and Kahlan have two big problems this season: (1) They kinda opened a Hellmouth when they defeated Darken Rahl last season. Oops. (2) A Mord Sith named Cara (Tabrett Bethell) has attached herself to Richard and Kahlan’s little family out of a deranged allegiance to Lord Rahl, a title that Richard inherited upon the late (evil) lord’s death.

(Quick sidebar with newbies who might be asking “What’s a Mord Sith?” Just imagine a coven of witches who have a rather ostentatious leather fetish, or cross Morgan la Fay from the King Arthur legends with Melinda Clarke’s Lady Heather from CSI, and you’ll have the general picture of who they are and where they fit into the show’s mythology.)

Anyway, as everyone knows, three’s a crowd, and once Cara joins up with Richard and Kahlan, the threesome quickly gets uncomfortable for the two ladies. Craig, however, says that Richard doesn’t totally hate it: “He’s got two beautiful chicks looking after him—he’s loving it! Kahlan is his love and his best friend, and he basically has to just override her suggestions and just go, ‘Look, I just trust [Cara].’ How hard would that have to be for Kahlan? That’s what’s great about this whole series—the tough choices we have to make that we’re faced with.”

For her part, Bridget Regan confirms that Kahlan is fairly underwhelmed by the idea of sharing her man with a space dominatrix: “That’s a whole can of worms because Cara comes in and we’ve both sworn to protect Richard. She’s sworn to protect the Lord Rahl, and I’ve said, well, I’m your Confessor and I’m going to lay down my life for you if need be—that’s not just because of her duty, it’s also because she loves the hell out of the man. Kahlan and Cara are enemies, yet they have the same goals, so it’s a bizarre relationship.”

Kahlan’s the nicest lady in the world, being a Confessor/nun and all, but Bridget tells us that in episode 11 Kahlan’s true feelings about the Richard-Cara connection get the better of her and she gets a chance to show off her bitchy side: “The episode is called ‘Torn,’ and Kahlan’s literally torn, there are two of her, she gets split. One part of her is this Confessor and she becomes this tyrannical leader—she doesn’t have that compassion that she needs—and then the other part of her is this girl who’s lovesick and jealous and crazy and just wants to be with Richard all the time.”

But according to Bridget, there is some good news for Richard-Kahlan fans in this scenario: “I’m shooting a love scene on Tuesday with Craig. It’s nerve-racking. I have to work on not blushing all day. The grips and lighting guys are like your brothers, and I just don’t look at them in the eye all day.”

And that’s not the only sexytime in the works this season. Craig tells us, “There will be some body swapping going on again, maybe some possession, maybe some different sides of each character coming out that they each didn’t know they had in them. Me and Bridget love any time we get to play another character. [There's one episode where] I’m this random, possessed old seeker who’s out for revenge.”

If those eps are anything like the body-swapping “Mirror” ep or the possession episode “Revenant” from season one, we can’t wait!

Legend of the Seeker premieres this weekend in syndication. The season premiere features Buffy and Angel alum Charisma Carpenter as a twisted Mord Sith named Triana. (FYI, Craig revealed to us that he’s a huge Buffy fan who totally geeked out when he meet C.C.: “I didn’t let it slip when I first met her, trying to be real cool, you know, and then 10 minutes went by and I was like, by the way, ‘Biggest Buffy fan ever, tell me everything.’ ”
