By the way, as an item of trivia, I learned recently that “marais” is French for “marsh.” A historian friend of mine told me that “Marais” is/was a fairly common name in South Africa. How did people of French extraction get there? French Huguenot (persecuted Protestant religious minority) origins. Not difficult to picture some of the family emigrating Down Under at some point.
